PERSIAN GULF BLOCKS

E&P BLOCKS OF IRAN

GENERAL REMARKS

The Persian Gulf is a shallow epicontinental sea with a tectonic origin (foreland Basin), which covers the Arabian shelf platform. NIOC is offering 3 Blocks in this area.

GEOLOGICAL SETTING

The structures in the Persian Gulf basin can be categorized in three groups in terms of mechanism of formation: structures which formed due to reactivation of Pan African trends, deep seated salt dome structures and those which are influenced by the Zagros orogeny. The northwest Persian Gulf was clearly influenced by deep-seated pre-existing north–south Arabian trends. These faults were reactivated most strongly during the Late Cretaceous.

The tectonic style of Bamdad block is relatively simple and the main tectonic processes shaping the structure of the area is Hormuz Salt doming.

PETROLEUM SYSTEMS

The main plays in the Northern part of the Persian Gulf are Cretaceous limestones which charged by Garau and Sargalu Formations. the Asmari Formation, lower Cretaceous and Jurassic successions can be regarded as the other possible plays. The Permo-Triassic reservoir is relatively deep in the northern Persian Gulf but can be regarded as the secondary objective. The main play in the Bamdad Block is the Permo-Triassic Dehram Group >

PROSPECTIVITY

Three commercial oil fields have been discovered within the northern Persian Gulf blocks producing from Asmari, Bangestan and Khami reservoirs. The undrilled reservoir targets in these fields also could be regarded as feature exploration targets. The supergiant Kish gas field is situated within Bamdad Block.
