GEOLOGICAL SETTING

The Moghan block is situated within the northern branch of Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt. It covers the western part of Talysh folded zone at the southern edge of Kura depression. The block is dominated by anticlines which formed the main structural traps of the area.

PETROLEUM SYSTEMS

The Oligo-Miocene Zivar and Ojagh Gheshlagh Formations (shale, siltstone and sandstone) are considered to be main reservoir rocks in Moghan area which charged by Salm Aghaji and Ojagh Gheshlagh Formations. The clay rich layers of Ojagh Gheshlagh and Zivar Formations as well as Tortonian succession can serve as the seal role for the reservoirs.

PROSPECTIVITY

Totally seven structural traps have been identified in Moghan Block. Moreover, stratigraphic traps have been identified in the area on the basis of 2D seismic lines. Three structures were drilled within the block which resulted in discovery of oil in Ghirdareh and Ortadagh fields.
